Pieter Wispelwey es, sin duda, uno de los grandes violonchelistas del siglo XX. Su rigor estilístico, fieles interpretaciones y maestría técnica han hecho que público y crítica le admiren por igual. Su repertorio va de Bach a Schnittke o Elliott Carter e incluye obras compuestas para él.

Nacido en Haarlem, Holanda, sus raíces musicales se cimentaron en sus grandes maestros: Dicky Boeke, Anner Bylsma, Paul Katz y William Pleeth.

Su carrera le ha hecho recorrer los cinco continentes y ha tocado como solista con muchas de las orquestas más prestigiosas del mundo, como la Boston Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, St. Paul’s Chamber Orchestra, Tokyo Philharmonic, Sydney Symphony, London Philharmonic, Hallé Orchestra, BBC Symphony, BBC Scottish Symphony, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Academy of Ancient Music, Gewandhaus Orchester Leipzig, Danish National Radio Symphony, Budapest Festival Orchestra y Camerata Salzburg.

Ha colaborado con grandes directores, entre los que destacan Ivan Fischer, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Herbert Blomstedt, Jeffrey Tate, Kent Nagano, sir Neville Marriner, Vassily Sinaisky, Vladimir Jurowski, Louis Langrée, Marc Minkowski, Ton Koopman, Libor Pesek y sir Roger Norrington.

Toca regularmente en las mejores salas del mundo: Wigmore Hall (Londres), Châtelet, Louvre (París), Concertgebouw y Muziekgebouw (Amsterdam), Konzerthaus (Berlín), Societta del Quartetto (Milán), Teatro Colón (Buenos Aires), Utson Hall (Sydney) y Lincoln Center (Nueva York), por señalar algunas.

Su discografía, editada en los sellos Onyx y Channel Classics, sobrepasa los 30 CD, seis de los cuales han sido premiados al más alto nivel internacional. Los más recientes incluyen grabaciones en directo del Concierto para violonchelo de Walton, la Sinfonía concertante de Prokofiev y la Sinfonía para violonchelo de Britten.

Pieter Wispelwey toca con un violonchelo de Giovanni Battista Guadagnini de 1760 y un chelo barroco de Rombouts de 1710.
