Peter Katona, guitar
Zoltán Katona, guitar

The Hungarian born Katona Twins, Peter and Zoltán, have given recitals throughout the world including performances at the Carnegie Hall in New York; the Purcell Room of the Royal Festival Hall and Wigmore Hall in London; the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam; the Suntory Hall in Tokyo; the Forbidden City in Beijing; the Alte Oper in Frankfurt and the Philharmonie in Cologne.

The twins have won numerous prizes, both individually and together. In 1998 they won the Concert Artists Guild Competition held in New York thereby securing management throughout the USA; tours soon followed as did their Carnegie Hall debut. In 1997 they were winners at the Young Concert Artist Trust auditions in London and that brought with it London based worldwide management; in the same year they successfully auditioned for the Park Lane contemporary music group. Earlier in their careers the twins won the S.T. Johnson Foundation prize in 1995 and The Laura Ashley prize in 1996. In 1993 they won first prize at the most prestigious guitar duo competition in Montelimar, France. In the same year Peter & Zoltán won first prize at the international guitar duo competition held in Bubenreuth, Germany and were awarded the Cultural Prize of the City of Kassel, Germany.

The wide repertoire of the duo spans from Scarlatti to Piazzolla’s tango music. Their programmes also include concertos for two guitars and orchestra by Rodrigo, Vivaldi, Bach and Tedesco. Michael Berkeley, Judith Bingham, Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez and several other contemporary composers have written for and dedicated works to them. They have been invited on numerous occasions to record for the BBC and other international television and radio stations. Their CD releases include music by Falla, Scarlatti and Handel; Rodrigo; Albéniz and pieces by Piazzolla, Granados, de Falla and Mozart.

REVIEWS

"The Katona Twins share not only a staggering virtuoso technique but rather eerie powers of ensemble. Identical not only in good looks, but in their playing style and charming stage manner, Peter and Zoltan know how to make a good show.”
The Times / Bridge water Hall, Manchester / January 1999

"Not since the advent of the Assad brothers have I been so impressed by a guitar duo. These Hungarian twin brothers have everything one might wish for. Forget about guitars, just buy this disc for the musical delight it offers - and waste no time in doing so!"
Gramophone Magazine, CD Scarlatti - Händel Apnl 2000

"The Katona Brothers played with precious intricacy and richness of sound: a performance of the highest standard.”
Cordoba / Spain Diario Cordoba 18/7/2000

"There is nothing sweeter than a guitar, except perhaps two”. Hungarian Katona twins proved that without doubt last night with a stunning performance. The level of understanding was such that it felt like there was one brain controlling four pairs of extremely dexterous hands. Put simply, some of the playing in their Serenata Espanola and Suite iberia selections was so exquisite it nearly drove me to audible puns of pleasure.
The Royal Gazette, Bermuda Festival, 6. Febmary 2001

"The young Hungarian twins put on a varied, technically dazzling show. . .Their proficiency and ease, even in technically arduous passages, was immediately evident, with their fluidity and grace in the concluding tarantelle particularly notable. That musicianship was abundant, too, during the rest of the concert, with the twins displaying flawless co-ordination in their dynamics and phrasing. . . Their performance of Handels "Suite in D minor" was a marvelous transcription, imbued with a sense of buoyancy and a surety of touch. . . . with the Katonas' impeccable phrasing making their two instruments breathe with the spirit of one. Anyone who enjoys classical guitar, in short -- and, indeed, anybody usually left indifferent by the instrument -- should hasten to see the Katonas. They’re extraordinary."
The Savannah Moming News, Savannah, GAl 10.03. 2001

"The Katona Twins music making was absolutely breathtaking . .an extremely delicate, rich and sensitive interpretation of all the works in program. These young charming musicians moved the audience to an extreme. . . . they played and felt the music in perfect unity. This harmony fascinated the audience.”
München Merkur 08.03.2001
