Andrew York “into the Light”

The Grammy-winning composer, and former member of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, has penned a musical work for the exhibition “Bruce Munro: Light,” which is on display this autumn at the Hermitage Museum and Gardens in Norfolk, Virginia.
Commissioned by the Tidewater Classical Guitar Society, the York piece is titled “Millennia Facing East,” which the Virginia-native York describes as a “crystallization” that works best when paired with “modern culture.”

The Wiltshire, England-based Munro is known for his large-scale multi-media installations. “Light,” his latest, presents visitors with seven outdoor and three indoor artworks.

Ken Pfeifer, of the Tidewater Classical Guitar Society, says that when he first saw the work of Munro, he instantly thought of the music that Andrew York had already composed for the Tidewater Guitar Orchestra.

“Many of York’s compositions speak to images of wind and darkness and light,” says Pfeifer. “So that the movement from Bruce Munro’s outdoor sculptures of light against darkness and amidst the varying winds of the grounds of the Hermitage seems a natural match.”

“Bruce Munro: Light” will be open till 8th February.
